UHIP Information for International Students
I am an international student. What primary healthcare plan am I covered under?
If you are a degree-earning international student, you will be automatically enrolled in UHIP for the twelve-month period running from September 1 to August 31 of the current academic year.
If you are an exchange student or a visiting international student you will be automatically enrolled in UHIP for the duration of the period for which you are attending the University.
UHIP is an affordable health insurance plan if you’ve come from outside Canada to study or work at an Ontario university. It pays the cost of medical treatment at a hospital or a doctor's visit. Without this insurance coverage, you would have to pay for healthcare out of your own pocket. This can be very expensive in Ontario.
Information about getting your UHIP Card and coverage is available here. You can reach the UHIP Office at uhip.information@utoronto.ca.
Please note that UHIP and UTSU are separate plans. In addition to UHIP coverage, a student may be enrolled in a supplementary health insurance through their student union. This plan is separate and gives them coverage for services OHIP or UHIP doesn’t cover (e.g. prescription drugs, dental care). Full-time undergraduate students at St. George and full-time students at the Toronto School of Theology are automatically enrolled in the UTSU's Health and Dental Plan.
